The Great Northern Railway running more than 1,700 miles from Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Seattle, Washington was the creation of the 19th century railroad tycoon James J. Hill. The Great Northern route was the northernmost transcontinental railroad route in the United States of America & was north of the Northern Pacific Railway route. The Great Northern was the only privately funded, and successfully built, transcontinental railroad in United States history.
