The USRA Heavy Mikado, often referred to as the Mike, was a USRA standard class of steam locomotive designed under the control of the United States Railroad Administration. The USRA Heavy Mikado first saw service after World War I. These locomotives had a 2-8-2 wheel arrangement - 1 unpowered axle, 4 driving axles & 1 unpowered trailing axle, this 2-8-2 wheel setup allows the locomotive to be built with the firebox behind instead of above the driving wheels, which allows a larger capacity firebox so there's more power & speed than a similar 2-8-0 steam locomotive. The CB&Q, Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad was a railroad that operated in the United States mid-west. The CB&Q covered a large area with its main connections including Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, St Louis, Kansas City & Denver. The CB&Q never seemed to get enough steam power to cover the wartime traffic & was assigned 15 Heavy Mikados by the USRA in 1919, Mikados which continued to perform long into the diesel era. Because of the vast coverage of this railroad throughout the mid-west & mountain states the CBQ used phrases such as everywhere west, way of the zephyrs & the way west.
