ALCO PA is a family of A1A-A1A diesel locomotives built by a partnership of ALCO (American Locomotive Company) & GE (General Electric) to haul passenger trains. The PA units were built between June 1946 & December 1953 both lead A unit - PA, & cabless booster B unit - PB models were built. 2 different models were built: 2,000 horsepower PA-1/PB-1 between September 1946 & June 1950; and the 2,250 horsepower PA-2/PB-2 between April 1950 & December 1953. The ATSF - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway also known as Santa Fe, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The Santa Fe Railway was named after the capital of New Mexico but never actually reached Santa Fe, as it was too difficult to lay the tracks because the terrain surrounding Santa Fe was unsuitable. Santa Fe was one of the pioneers in intermodal freight service. A bus line allowed the company to extend passenger transportation service to areas not accessible by rail. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad to form the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway on December 31 1996. The Red Warbonnet paint scheme is reminiscent of a Native American ceremonial headdress. The scheme consisted of a red bonnet which wrapped around the front of the unit and was bordered by a yellow stripe & black pinstripe. The extent of the bonnet varied according to the locomotive model & was largely determined by the shape & length of the locomotives body. The remainder of the unit was either painted silver or was composed of stainless-steel panels. The Santa Fe used Alco PA/PB units for passenger service, with the famous warbonnet paint scheme. Alco PA/PB units have pulled many trains from the San Diegan to the Super Chief. The ALCO PA/PB units have distinctive long rounded noses.
