The Toyamako Line, is a tram line of Toyama Light Rail in the capital city of Toyama Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture. The Toyamako line runs from Toyamaekikita next to Toyama Station and goes north to Iwasehama in a town of the Toyama Port on Sea of Japan. The Toyamako Line is nicknamed Portram after Toyama Port & Tram. Before the Japanese National Railways was privatised in 1987 they modified the Toyamako Lines electrification system to 1500 V DC. The Toyamako line was run for a short period by the JR West Network (West Japan Railway Company) until a public-private partnership was set up to own & operated the line. The Toyakako line, under the service of a Toyama based company after a long period of outside management, was then modified for light rail services & re-opened in 2006 they added street track-age to bring the line to the plaza in front of the station. The line, regarded as the first of fully converted or constructed light rail transit (LRT) in Japan, proved to be a success under Toyama Light Rail ownership. Light rail is a form of public urban transport. Light rail has a lower capacity & speed than heavy rail & metro systems but higher than traditional tram systems. Light rail is a term used to refer to rail systems with rapid-transit features usually including electric rail cars that operate mainly in private rights-of-way, usually separated from other traffic but if necessary mixed with other traffic on city streets.
