The aircraft carrier Ark Royal was the 3rd vessel of the Royal Navy to bear the name. She was launched at the Birkenhead shipyard of Cammel Laird on the 13th April 1937. HMS Ark Royal was involved in the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck but later whilst on Malta convoy duty, was torpedoed by the German sub U-81. Despite all attempts to tow her to Gibraltar the Ark Royal slowly heeled over & at 0613hrs on 14 Nov 1941 she eventually went down, with only 1 sailor losing his life.
